The necropolis was firstly excavated in the late 19th century. The recovery of 179 small vases and pithoi in the excavation carried out by Grigoris Bournias during the two first weeks of June 1863 was recorded in the minutes of the Archaeological Society. Two small-scale rescue excavations were conducted in 1911 and 1915 by the Greek archaeologists Konstantinos Kourouniotis and Stratis Pelekidis respectively.
